Nuance showcases customer speaker verification deployments, and demonstrates leading voice biometric solution based on Nuance Verifier 4.0 at Voice Biometrics Conference London

UK, London, 13 November, 2007 – With identity theft a growing concern affecting businesses and consumers alike, at this year’s Voice Biometrics Conference, London (28-29 November, Grange City Hotel), Nuance Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NUAN), will demonstrate how its advanced speaker verification solutions provide an additional layer of robust protection to mitigate against the risk of an identity-related security breech. Visitors to the Nuance stand and delegates attending its presentation will be able to meet with Nuance voice biometrics experts, learn why Nuance is the leader in speaker verification solutions, and sample Nuance Verifier 4.0, its advanced voice authentication software.

In the UK in 2006, approximately 80,000 cases of identity and impersonation fraud were identified, costing the economy £1.5 billion (Cabinet Office figures, 2006). Telephone fraud, often conducted with a stolen identity, is worth between £1bn - £3bn per year, and is estimated to cost each person £300 per year in bank charges. But against the backdrop of increasing identity-related fraud, call centres, despite their rudimentary security procedures, still remain a popular point of contact between businesses and their clients for conducting transactions, checking account details or ordering goods and services over the telephone. Implementing voice biometrics as a security feature further validates the caller’s identity, thus mitigating risk on the behalf of both the customer and the businesses.

Nuance speaker verification solutions have already been deployed by dozens of leading companies in the banking and financial services, telecommunications and travel industries, to provide them and their customers with a reassuring and effective method for both authenticating and protecting a customer’s identity. For example, Standard Bank and Aeroplan have deployed Nuance speech technology in telephone-based customer service applications, offering their customers a convenient and secure method for accessing their accounts.

Lynda Kate Smith, vice president and general manager, Nuance Care business unit, said: “Customers enjoy the great convenience offered by call centres. But customers and business are recognizing that due to identity theft, conventional security checks can easily be breeched. Voice biometrics ups the security bar, and provides an extra layer of security that is solely dependant on the uniqueness of the customer’s voice. Nuance’s unmatched experience in speech technology makes it the natural choice with respect to speaker verification integration.” She added: “From a business perspective, by improving self-service using speech, organisations can reduce the number of agents that need direct access to customers, thereby reducing the cost of security and background checks.”

A Voice Biometrics Show Gold sponsor, Nuance will be present with a stand at the conference, while Dan Faulkner, Nuance’s Director, Product Management and Solution Marketing, will deliver a presentation at 3.30pm on Thursday 29 November on the subject of ‘The Multifactor Mandate’.
